SUMMARY:Yale Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Two Options for May Day of Service: \n\n\n\nSouth: Board member Lisa Catapano-Friedman writes: Help Habitat for Humanity complete a beautiful\, highly energy efficient home on Greenview Drive in Bennington that they are building with a family of six refugees. This is the fourth Habitat home on this road\, with another currently in progress in the neighborhood. The organizer for Habitat is Tye Poquette and he can be contacted at HERE\, and he can tell you how to sign up. \n\n\n\nNorth: The Yale Club of Vermont is honored to participate in the Yale Day of Service on Sat 5/9/26. Join us at ANEW Place in Burlington\, Vermont\, a transitional shelter for homeless individuals with a focus on supporting their goal to permanent housing. Our group of Yale volunteers will plan and prepare a meal in the shelter’s kitchen and serve dinner to around twenty guests. Feel free to bring a dish or side to prepare if you wish\, but no need! There will be plenty to prepare. Also please feel free to bring your musical instrument to entertain the guests during dinner if inspired! We will meet at 4:30 and dinner is served around 6 or 6:30. If you can’t join us that day\, drop a line to let us know if you might be available and interested another time\, as we are sure to return throughout the year. Being together and being of service in the spirit of Yale is the goal of the evening! Email Laura McGevna to sign up.

SUMMARY:Book Club April 22
DESCRIPTION:Henry Knox’s Noble Train: The Story of a Boston Bookseller’s Heroic Expedition That Saved the American Revolution. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark your calendar April 22\, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm \n\n\n\nDuring the brutal winter of 1775-1776\, an untested Boston bookseller named Henry Knox commandeered an oxen train hauling 60 tons of cannons and other artillery from Fort Ticonderoga near the Canadian border. He and his men journeyed some 300 miles south and east over frozen\, often treacherous terrain to supply George Washington for his attack of British troops occupying Boston. The result was the British surrender of Boston and the first major victory for the Colonial Army. This is one of the great stories of the American Revolution\, still little known by comparison with the more famous battles of Concord\, Lexington\, and Bunker Hill. \n\n\n\nThis exciting tale of daunting odds and undaunted determination highlights a pivotal episode that changed history. Register here. \n\n\n\nSpecial Guest Announcement:We are delighted to welcome Stuart Lilie\, Vice President of Public History at the Fort Ticonderoga Association\, who will join our discussion to share insights on Henry Knox’s remarkable journey and the enduring legacy of Fort Ticonderoga in Revolutionary history. \n\n\n\nFor Spring 2026\, the Yale Club of Vermont Book Club features a work that is both timely and of local interest. Almost exactly 250 years ago\, Henry Knox transported cannons through frozen terrain from Fort Ticonderoga to Massachusetts to help relieve Boston from the British. \n\n\n\nFort Ticonderoga is a regional gem and\, along with the Ethan Allen associations\, looms large in Vermont history. The 250th anniversary of the “Noble Train” has been marked by extensive reenactments between our region and Boston. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Zoom on Wednesday\, April 22\, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a lively discussion of the book and the history of the Revolution in northern New England. \n\n\n\nThe Yale Club of Vermont now formally invites all New England Yale Clubs to join us for these virtual book gatherings. Many of our clubs include members spread across remote islands\, mountain towns\, and wooded communities\, where coming together online offers a meaningful way to connect. Alumni from across the region — and others who find their way to us — are warmly welcome. \n\n\n\nRegistration is now open!

SUMMARY:Book Club: January 14: The Director
DESCRIPTION:The Director\, by Daniel Kehlman\, is a New York Times top five fiction books of 2025 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis fascinating historical novel follows the later career of G.W. Pabst\, the brilliant German film director who created Pandora’s Box and the Threepenny Opera\, and who made both Garbo and Louise Brooks world famous. A few years before World War II\, Pabst and his wife and son settle in Hollywood\, then in Paris\, before he is pressured to return to Austria where his aging mother lives\, on the eve of the invasion of Poland. We observe him and his family as they each learn to live in the Third Reich’s reality of strongmen\, implicit threats and ethical choices. Pabst remains a director first and foremost\, attempting to imprint his visual style to any film he may find himself forced to make. He faces the prospect of compromising every creative principle he once held.  Timely and complex\, and often quite funny\, this is a portrait of one man’s test of integrity in an increasing fracturing world.  You must register to participate.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Club of Vermont Book Club’s next meeting happens on Wednesday\, October 15\, 2025\, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Zoom. The book is Twist\, by Collum McCann. Register here. \n\n\n\n“EVERYTHING GETS FIXED\, AND WE ALL STAY BROKEN”\n\n\n\nTwist is a propulsive novel of rupture and repair in the digital age\, delving into a hidden world deep under the ocean—from the New York Times bestselling author of Apeirogon and Let the Great World Spin. \n\n\n\nAnthony Fennell\, an Irish journalist and playwright\, is assigned to cover the underwater cables that carry the world’s information. But sometimes the tubes break\, at an unfathomable depth. He meets a fellow Irishman\, John Conway\, the chief of mission on a cable repair ship. The mysterious Conway is a skilled engineer and a freediver capable of reaching extraordinary depths.  When the ship is sent up the coast to repair a series of major underwater breaks\, both men learn that the very cables they seek to fix carry the news that may cause their lives to unravel.  \n\n\n\n“Colum McCann gives us a powerfully realist novel of men at sea\, literally\, emotionally\, and metaphorically. It speaks of the brokenness of our time\, the successful and unsuccessful attempts at repairs\, and the vulnerability of our world. The spirit of Joseph Conrad hovers over the text\, but here the heart of darkness lies at the bottom of the ocean.”—Salman Rushdie \n\n\n\n“McCann may follow Coppola upriver and Conrad to the heart of darkness\, but the concerns of his novel are contemporary and urgent and utterly compelling. This is an ambitious novel\, note-perfect\, wild but controlled\, with its deft apparatus mapping our most mysterious twenty-first-century malaise—the great loneliness of the connected world.”—Kevin Barry

SUMMARY:Book Club to Welcome Back Archer Mayor
DESCRIPTION:Yale Grad and popular Vermont Author Archer Mayor Will Join us for a lively discussion of his Joe Gunther Mystery Tucker Peak. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTucker Peak is a quintessential Vermont Story about a small ski resort struggling to survive\, and a string of burglaries at the ski condos that leave resort management even more beleaguered. Joe has left his work in Brattleboro to oversee the newly-minted Vermont Bureau of Investigation. Gunther’s elite squad sniffs at first about assisting with such small-potatoes crime\, but as quick as you can say maple syrup\, the problems escalate to murder\, drugs\, embezzlement\, the ethics of snowmaking\, and beyond.  \n\n\n\nThis action-packed crime novel about the underbelly of a one-company town is a particular delight for Vermont readers\, sure to connect with local themes. \n\n\n\nThis event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday\, April 9\, 2025\, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Register here.

SUMMARY:Ski with Harvard and Brown February 21
DESCRIPTION:On Friday February 21 the combined Yale and Brown Clubs hit the slopes at Bolton Valley. The night shift started at 4:00 pm as the lights came on from the summit to the base.  The intrepid participants soldiered on through the unexpected snow to conquer the mountain in true Ivy fashion.  We were ever true and ever blue! \n\n\n\nIt’s not all work and no play\, so seven of us gathered in the Tavern for dinner – three from Brown\, three from Yale\, and one with dual citizenship. Some had to head home afterwards\, but others went back out for some post-prandial and post-libational runs. We’ll do it again next year! The weather is really cooperating for the ski event at Bolton on the 21st. SUMMARY:Yale Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Yalies around the world will be gathering in May to give back to the community in a variety of ways. Here is one opportunity for service in Vermont: On Saturday\, May 11\, join fellow Yalies at Josh’s House in Colchester to support Vermont veterans. Thanks to one of our own\, Dr. Laura McGevna Nelson\, Yale College 2001\, for organizing this event. \n\n\n\nMany of our veterans are in need of support\, grappling with food or housing insecurity and chronic illnesses including PTSD. Josh’s House is a non-profit recreational center whose entire mission is caring for these veterans. \n\n\n\nDo you love to cook? We are signed up for their meal train on May 11. So we need to donate enough food to feed 40-50 people. We’ll also help spruce up the grounds and stock the pantry with non-perishable items. (You don’t need to donate items to participate.) It’s for a great cause and a remarkably appreciative group! \n\n\n\nTo volunteer for this Day of Service\, contact Laura McGevna Nelson.

SUMMARY:April Book Club: Daughters of Yalta
DESCRIPTION:Save the date: Next Book Club April 17\, 2024. The next selection will be the club’s first dive into non-fiction. The Three Daughters of Yalta: The Churchills\, Roosevelts and Harrimans: A Story of Love and War by Catherine Grace Katz tells the dramatic story of three remarkable young women who accompanied their famous fathers to the Yalta Conference in the waning days of World War II. A zoom link will be sent to registrants in a separate email the day before the Book Club. \n\n\n\nTo register\, please RSVP via email to Mary Jane Mona at maryjanemona@gmail.com. You will receive a confirmation email upon registering. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about the book from The New York Times: \n\n\n\nThe Daughters of Yalta is Katz’s first book\, and gives a “detailed behind-the-scenes account of the conference.” Katz “skillfully marshals diaries\, letters\, oral histories and memoirs to support her thesis that the pressures of wartime had warped normal familial bonds\, so that the Western leaders’ relationships with their daughters had become more like those between business partners than between parent and child.” This eminently readable account is “packed with vivid personalities\, jockeying aides and insider observations about a pivotal moment in history.

SUMMARY:Salon with Ken Ellingwood
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Club of Vermont’ s March Salon will feature one of its own members\, Ken Ellingwood\, Yale College ’82 (BK). Now a Vermonter\, this globetrotting journalist and author will lead a discussion of his book\, First to Fall: Elijah Lovejoy and the Fight for a Free Press in the Age of Slavery. This work of narrative nonfiction tells the story of a courageous newspaper editor (Lovejoy) who stood up to violent mobs in order to combat slavery. A staunch defender of freedom of the press\, Lovejoy was ultimately killed by pro-slavery attackers\, the first American journalist killed in the line of duty. His story has particular resonance at the moment\, as America continues to deal with issues of a free press and the legacy of slavery. \n\n\n\nTo order your own copy of “First to Fall\,” click on this link:https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/First-to-Fall/Ken-Ellingwood/9781643137025. \n\n\n\nFollowing an introductory presentation there will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion. Light refreshments will be served.  \n\n\n\n We’ll gather on Saturday\, March 23\, 2024\, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Duxbury home of Yale Club Board Member Jim Lengel\, Yale College ’71. RSVP below to receive directions to Jim’s house. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKen Ellingwood

SUMMARY:Book Club November 29
DESCRIPTION:For our next Yale Club of Vermont Book Club\, we are reading The Personal Librarian\, historical fiction by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. \n\n\n\nA remarkable novel about J. P. Morgan’s personal librarian\, Belle da Costa Greene\, daughter of the first African-American graduate of Harvard. Hiding her racial identity to be hired by Morgan\, Greene becomes a fixture in the New York book and art world\, and leaves a lasting legacy — the collection of rare manuscripts\, books and artwork of the J.P. Morgan Library. Thanks to Elaine Gustafson for this timely suggestion. There is currently an exhibition of some of the prize manuscripts of the library — including Gutenberg bibles — on exhibition at the J.P.Morgan Library\, through January 2024. And next year\, the Library will open an exhibition devoted to the life and work of Belle da Costa Greene herself.  Happy Reading! SUMMARY:American Cuisine with Paul Freedman
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Yale Club of Vermont for an evening with Paul Freedman\, Charles D. Tripp Professor of History: American Cuisine … And How It Got This Way While we have a good (if not completely accurate) idea of what Italian\, Mexican or Indian cuisine is\, American cuisine could be anything from fast food to regional to eclectic and international. Many people\, in other countries especially\, don’t think there is such a thing as American cuisine. The talk considers the history of what American have eaten and what constitutes our culinary aesthetic.  \n\n\n\nRegister here. \n\n\n\nAbout Professor FreedmanProfessor Freedman specializes in medieval social history\, the history of Catalonia\, comparative studies of the peasantry\, trade in luxury products\, and the history of cuisine. His latest book is American Cuisine and How It Got This Way (Liveright/Norton\, 2020). \n\n\n\nFreedman earned his BA at the University of California at Santa Cruz and an MLS from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. He received a Ph.D. in History at Berkeley in 1978. His doctoral work focused on medieval Catalonia and how the bishop and canons interacted with the powerful and weak elements of lay society in Vic\, north of Barcelona. This resulted in the publication of The Diocese of Vic: Tradition and Regeneration in Medieval Catalonia(1983). \n\n\n\nFreedman taught for eighteen years at Vanderbilt University before joining the Yale faculty in 1997. At Vanderbilt\, he focused on the history of Catalan peasantry\, papal correspondence with Catalonia and a comparative history of European seigneurial regimes. He was awarded Vanderbilt’s Nordhaus Teaching Prize in 1989 and was the Robert Penn Warren Humanities Center Fellow there in 1991-1992. During that time\, he published his second book\, Origins of Peasant Servitude in Medieval Catalonia (1991).Since coming to Yale\, Professor Freedman has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies in History\, Director of the Medieval Studies Program\, Chair of the History Department\, and Chair of the Program in the History of Science and Medicine He has offered graduate seminars on the social history of the Middle Ages\, church\, society and politics\, and agrarian studies (as part of a team-taught course). \n\n\n\nFreedman was a visiting fellow at the Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte in Göttingen in 2000 and Directeur d’Études Associé at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris in 1995. His third book was Images of the Medieval Peasant (1999) and there are two collections of his essays: Church\, Law and Society in Catalonia\, 900-1500 and Assaigs d’historia de la pagesia catalana ( “Essays on the History of the Catalan Peasantry\,” translated into Catalan). \n\n\n\nFreedman edited Food: The History of Taste\, an illustrated collection of essays about food from prehistoric to contemporary times published by Thames & Hudson (London) and in the US by the University of California Press (2007). His book on the demand for spices in medieval Europe was published in 2008 by Yale University Press. It is entitled Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination. In the field of culinary history\, he published Ten Restaurants That Changed America in 2016 (Liveright/Norton). A book for Yale University Press entitled Why Food Matters will appear in 2021.

SUMMARY:Yale Club Salon: Design/Build
DESCRIPTION:Statewide Virtual Discussion via Zoom  \n\n\n\nWe are excited to introduce a new program for the Yale Club of Vermont and hope you will be able to join us! \n\n\n\nDesign/Build\n\n\n\nYale Club Salons are designed to give you an opportunity to get up-close and personal with someone who is accomplished in their field\, a fellow Yalie\, and a fellow Vermonter! \n\n\n\nDanny Sagan is an architect practicing in Vermont who teaches Active Building Systems at Norwich University and is actively researching the origins of the Design/Build movement in Vermont.  \n\n\n\nSagan will be talking about the Design/Build movement\, which took root in the Prickly Mountain area of the Mad River Valley in the late 1960s and was adopted by a motley crew of Ivy League refugees\, many of whom stayed on to become the leading architects\, builders\, and renewable energy entrepreneurs practicing in the state today. He will highlight several of the movement’s key figures who also went to Yale and who continue their legacy through the ongoing presence of the Yestermorrow School. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will last about a half-hour with additional time left for questions and group participation. This salon is free and open to all members of the Yale Community. Meet some fellow Yalies and learn more about what interesting Bulldogs are living in these beautiful Green Mountains. SUMMARY:February Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We’ve got a date (February 8\, 7 pm) and we’ve got a book. The next selection is Horse\, a novel by Geraldine Brooks. Here’s the publisher’s description: \n\n\n\nKentucky\, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war\, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night\, he reunites with the stallion and his groom\, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.  \n\n\n\nNew York City\, 1954. Martha Jackson\, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters\, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. \n\n\n\nWashington\, DC\, 2019. Jess\, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia\, and Theo\, a Nigerian-American art historian\, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse—one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance\, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. \n\n\n\nBased on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington\, Horse is a novel of art and science\, love and obsession\, and our unfinished reckoning with racism. As always\, all are welcome at our book club discussions!
