Ian McEwan and Nutshell
Ian McEwan is a contemporary wonder of a novelist, prolific and diverse in his subjects, penning such masterpieces as Atonement, Sweet Tooth, Saturday and On Chesil Beach. In the short novel Nutshell, McEwan offers a thoroughly modern, loose retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Narrated from a perspective unlike any other, Nutshell upends this classic tale of murder and deceit from one of the world’s master storytellers.
“O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams.”
Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2
